Dex ducked behind a tree as Jumie opened fire from a crouched position, cutting through a wall of bushes. People shouted but he had no idea if they’d been hit or were pinned down by the sudden attack. The foliage caught fire, crackling loudly as the flames licked the trees around them.

If we cause a forest fire, Dex thought, this whole place might turn into hell fast. They didn’t have a way to put it out, especially with enemy blips literally thirty feet away.

“Moving!” Noko called out. Dex glanced over, watching as the private advanced to another tree, shooting as he went. The others laid down suppressive fire for him, causing more shouts from the enemy on the other side. Brix followed him. The two flanked the burning bushes, crouched by large trees.

“We have to press through,” Jumie shouted to Dex. “These guys are trying to keep us pinned down here.”

“I agree.” Dex checked the scans. They were flickering in and out but he had an idea. “Come with me.”

“Where are we going?” Jumie fell in behind him, both remaining crouched. They slipped through some bushes, heading directly east of the conflict. “You want to flank them?”

“Yes, be quiet,” Dex muttered. They moved a good twenty yards before doubling back, coming at the enemy from the side. Conflict raged between the enemy forces and the other marines, who seemed to be doing a solid job of holding them in place. As they approached, Dex slowed, motioning for Jumie to take the left side.

They separated, giving themselves the widest angle of fire before pressing through the final natural barrier. Four enemy troops pressed themselves against a fallen tree, occasionally popping up to shoot at the others. Dex found himself directly to their side. Jumie had an angle, granting him a view of the man on the far end of the line.

Okay, time to end this one. Dex made eye contact with Jumie, nodding once.

Their weapons hummed as they blasted into the crowd. The first two men on either side of the four went down instantly. The others looked about frantically, one making a break for it. The other marines tore him down, four blasts cutting through his back so a wide, burning hole appeared in his chest.

The other one fired randomly behind him without getting up. Dex took a moment to aim, killing him with a quick shot to the head. The marines converged near the bodies, ensuring they were all down.

Dex turned to the scanner. “We’ve got another mile. Looks mostly clear between us and the wall. Double time it. Even through this foliage, we can get there fast enough.”

“What about Prin?” Jumie asked. “And did Zadok come with her? I wouldn’t mind seeing that jack ass get a little dirty down here.”

“I didn’t ask.” Dex turned to the others. “Fallout.” They hustled away from the site of the conflict, making a break for the wall. Off in the distance, explosions sounded like claps of thunder. Some of them came from engines as they went supersonic, others from live ordnance exploding here and there.
